Essential Oils - Can Age and Sex Affect Our Sense of Smell?

Essential Oils - Can Age and Sex Affect Our Sense of Smell?

Absolutely! As we become older our sense of smell is not what it used to be. Research has shown that our sense of smell peeks between ages 20 and 40 with a marked decline after 60. Anosmia (the loss of smell) selectively occurs among the elderly first with bad odors whereas sensitivity to pleasant odors remains relatively normal even into advanced years. For many of the elderly who have lost their sense of smell, food is un-appealing and may contribute to depression.
What can cause anosmia in a relatively younger healthy person? Trauma of course, but anosmia can also occur from a life of abuse and exposure to toxins. It can also be a result of chronic sinus infections. There can be selective anosmia or smell blindness to some particular odors or total anosmia which is the complete loss of smell. Anosmia is always associated with psychological depression paralleling the dullness of taste and smell. Research also shows that exposure to certain medicinal and environmental agents can adversely affect the sense of smell-in fact they can impair the sense of smell all together.
What About Sex-Does That Make a Difference in Smelling?
Women are thought to have a greater sense of smell than men which is quite interesting since most 'noses' or professional perfumers are not women-they are men! Research has shown that female infants are more attentive to scented artifacts than male babies. It seems that even from birth, women have a greater olfactory sensitivity. One interesting piece of research I found was on the time of day. Women's smell acuity is usually sharpest in the morning hours, declining as the day progresses. In contrast, males smell ability is constant throughout the day and by afternoon equals that of women with both male and female peeking again around midnight.
Could these differences be attributed to the differences in brain structure between men and women? That is possible. We know that the male brain is larger, heavier and organized differently than that of women. Women are observed to be more emotionally sensitive and right-brain oriented than men. Consequently women respond, behave, think and feel differently from men and their olfaction preferences are different. The fragrance industry has learned that men prefer complex floral and spicy fragrances whereas women like simple, single-note fragrances. Males will pick a fragrance and stick with it whereas women change their preferences frequently and like clean fresh scents. Can you guess who it is that the perfume industry caters to?

Make special scents around the house.

We all know how wonderful smell can be. They can take us back to our childhood or remind us of wonderful times that we have had. Scents can take us to specific times like Christmas or vacations past. Why not put the amazing power into your romance. Go to the store and find the aisle with the scented plug devices in it and start browsing. Look for scents that might remind your lover of past experiences. Like if you have been to Hawaii or just desire to go then pick up some coconut or pineapple scents. Want to make it feel a little more like Christmas time then maybe some pine scent or sugar cookie scent will take you there. Surprise you partner and put the device in when they won't be home for a while. Upon return watch their face as the pick up the scent. You might be able to take away a little of their daily stress by taking them away with these triggers.

Find a scent your partner enjoys!

There are thousands of perfumes and colognes out on the market today. However not all them appeal to everyone. What you might really like the smell of your partner might find annoying to the senses. When you put on your perfume/cologne you want your partner to notice in a good way. This can be a daunting task if you use the trial and error method not to mention expensive. My suggestion is the next time they two of you are out together take a few moments to visit the perfume/cologne shop. Most of your malls will have a store dedicated to making you smell good and they usually have samplers available for you to try out before you purchase. This way you can see what you partner enjoys and if your lucky you might find one that turns them on. The most important thing to look for is something that is pleasant for them to smell but also pick the one that turns them on for those nights of passion. Our sense of smell is one of the last things we plan for in our love life but it might just be the first one that hits us. Scents can set the mood for many things so don't over look it.

Peppermint Candy Canes and Kisses.

With this time of year it is a good idea to always be ready for a kiss. The last thing you want is stinky breath when that lovely person comes up to kiss you. During this time of year it is easy to keep your breath fresh and inviting for that special someone. Keep several of the smaller candy canes with you and pop one in your mouth from time to time. Not only will they keep your breath from getting stinky but they give a little tingle to your kisses. This way you become even sweeter to kiss for you partner. Go a couple of steps farther and pick up some peppermint body lotion so that whenever your partner is near you they can help but smell your inviting scent. Can you almost smell the peppermint right now!

Drive them wild with their favorite.

Want to really drive the person you care about wild. First thing you need to do is find a cologne or perfume that they absolutely love. Then when ever you are with them put a little on. Sure when you are going out together they will expect it but do it other times when they least expect it. Like right before getting into bed, or before you start watching a movie at home together. Don't over due it, just a little will do the trick. Put some on when you know the two of you are going to be close, like when the two of your are doing the laundry or doing other house work together. Another romantic thing to do is put a dab on their pillow when they are going to go to bed before you. They might not be able to sleep and will for some reason keep thinking of you. Put a little hint of the smell in their car before they leave for work or better yet do it while they are at work then they will smell your scent all the way home. The important thing here is to get them thinking about you and letting them know that you are thinking about them. If you try any of these suggestions let me know how they work out. I would love to hear your stories, email them to me a thecouplesspot@gmail.com

Coconut Oil more then what you might think!

Coconut oil has long been known for its amazing smell and skin smoothing properties. It may also be used as a lubricant. Coconut oil is one of those products that seem to have so much up side. Since the smell of coconut can be a sexual stimulant it is a wonderful product to use in a massage. Not only will you get your partner loosened up with a massage they will be taking in a wonderful sexy smell. Then if the mood is right you also have a great lubricant for both of you handy. Always make sure there are not any extra product in your coconut oil and that it is natural and not an artificial version. Have you partner close their eyes and enjoy the smell and the after effects of Coconut Oil.

It's about time to fire up the fireplace.

The air outside is starting to get cold and it is about time to fire up the fireplace. Nothing is more romantic then sitting with your lover snuggled up in front of a nice cosy fireplace. This is something you need to think about when purchasing a house. Especially if you are buying the house in the heat of the summer. In the summer you might not think a fireplace is that important. Let's look at the romance factor. Sipping wine in front of a fireplace snuggled up with you honey. The crackling sound the smell of the wood, being in your own house, things could get a little heated up and why shouldn't they. If you have a fireplace now is the time to make sure it is in good order. Get someone out to clean the chimney, clean out the opening and get all the old ashes out. That way when the time comes to build that first romantic fire of the season you or your love won't be disappointed.

Sometimes more it not necessarily better.

Don't you love the way a great perfume or cologne smells on your partner. Have you ever known anyone that uses way to much perfume or cologne? Well the opposite is true of these people, they don't smell good. I know for me when I get next to someone who has way to much perfume or cologne on it gives me a headache. I wonder how can they stand the smell. Let me start by saying perfume and or cologne is not a replacement for a shower! You should only have to use a small amount or either to get your desired effect. After all you want your special someone to be the only person to notice you aroma not your entire office. A good way to avoid putting to much on is to stay away from perfume or cologne that has a spray top. Get something that you have to dabble on. Put a small amount on areas like your chest, inside of your wrist, or neck for the gentlemen. Ladies us your little dabbles between your breasts, the inside or your wrists, or your neck also. Another important tip is to not put the cologne or perfume on you clothes, it works much better on your body and could stain your clothes.

Think of it this way, would you want your partner to get in close to have to smell your perfume or cologne. I have some friends that think the more perfume or cologne they wear the better. This are also the friends I know when they are around because I can smell them first before I see them. So go out and get a really good perfume or cologne and use it sparingly. If you purchase good quality items they will last for a long time if you don't take a bath in it.

Lather her with riches. (Click here to find luxury soaps)

During one of your shopping sprees take some time to find a really high quality soap. Not your normal soaps you pick up at the local discount store. Find the ones that might be a lot higher in price but are suppose to be excellent for you skin. I have added a link at the top of the page that might help you out. Present her with the high end soap before her next bath or shower. Tell her that you want only the best to be placed on her body. After she showers make sure to take some time to caress her skin and tell her how great it feels. Nothing makes a woman feel more special then pampering her a little bit. Experiment a little and find out what she like and dislikes for future purchases.

Some words of warning make sure not to pick up something she might be allergic to, that will really kill the thought. Don't be afraid to ask a sales person to help sometimes as a man we don't particular think the same when we pick out soaps as our partner does. A woman's input will help you out.
