The Energy of the World Cup: A Soccer Novice Discovers Something Bigger Than the Game

The Energy of the World Cup: A Soccer Novice Discovers Something Bigger Than the Game

I'll be completely honest with you.

I haven't spent much of my life watching soccer.

In fact, if you asked me to explain the offside rule, there's a pretty good chance I'd look at you, nod thoughtfully, and then immediately change the subject to baseball.

When it comes to soccer, I'm a complete novice.

But one thing I've tried to do throughout my life is keep an open mind.

So with the 2026 FIFA World Cup taking place right here in North America, I decided it was time to jump in and experience what billions of people around the world already know and love.

And you know what?

I'm really enjoying it.

Sometimes It's Okay to Be the Beginner

One of the best things about trying something new is admitting you don't know everything.

I don't understand every strategy.

I don't always know why the referee blows the whistle.

Sometimes everyone in the stadium is cheering while I'm still trying to figure out what just happened.

And that's okay.

There's something refreshing about being a beginner again.

Too often we avoid new experiences because we're afraid of looking uninformed.

But growth begins the moment we become comfortable saying:

"Teach me."

The Pageantry Is Incredible

The first thing that struck me wasn't even the soccer.

It was the atmosphere.

The flags.

The singing.

The colors.

The chants.

The excitement.

Fans from every corner of the globe coming together wearing their country's colors with incredible pride.

It isn't just a sporting event.

It's a celebration of humanity.

And honestly...

I wish we had more events like this.

For a few hours, people from different cultures, different languages, and different backgrounds gather together because of a shared love of the game.

In a world that often focuses on what separates us, the World Cup reminds us of how much we can enjoy together.

That's a beautiful kind of energy.

The Energy of the Crowd

If you've followed the Make Peace With Life blog for very long, you already know something about me.

I absolutely love the energy of crowds.

Whether it's a baseball game.

A football stadium.

A concert.

A race.

Or now...

The World Cup.

There is something almost electric about thousands of people sharing the same emotional experience.

From a metaphysical perspective, that's fascinating.

Think about it.

Thousands upon thousands of people become emotionally synchronized.

They cheer together.

They celebrate together.

They gasp together.

They hold their breath together.

For a few moments, everyone's attention is focused on the exact same thing.

That's an incredible exchange of collective energy.

I don't just enjoy watching the players.

I enjoy watching the fans.

Their excitement is contagious.

You can almost feel their energy coming through the television screen.

And yes...

I'm happily borrowing a little of it.

Witnessing History

One of the unexpected joys of watching the World Cup has been realizing that I'm witnessing history.

Players like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have inspired millions of people around the world.

Even someone like me, who hasn't followed soccer closely, knows I'm watching two of the greatest players ever to step onto the pitch.

That's pretty special.

Every sport has its legends.

Watching them compete reminds us to appreciate greatness while it's happening.

The Next Generation

What has been equally exciting is watching the next generation emerge.

Players like Erling Haaland represent the future of the sport.

Every generation eventually hands the ball to the next one.

That's true in sports.

It's true in business.

It's true in families.

And it's true in life.

The next stars are always preparing to write their own stories.

Will Soccer Replace My Favorite Sports?

Let's not get carried away.

My heart still belongs to my Penn State Nittany Lions on Saturdays.

And I'll always be cheering for my Denver Broncos every football season.

Those traditions aren't going anywhere.

But here's what surprised me.

The World Cup doesn't have to replace the sports I already love.

It simply gives me another way to appreciate the incredible things people can accomplish together.

Sometimes we think enjoying something new means giving up something old.

It doesn't.

Life is big enough for both.

The World Playing Together

Perhaps the greatest lesson the World Cup has taught me has very little to do with soccer.

It has everything to do with people.

Imagine if we found more reasons to come together with this much passion.

Imagine if we celebrated our differences as enthusiastically as we celebrate goals.

Imagine if we sang together a little more often.

Imagine if we spent more time cheering each other on instead of trying to prove each other wrong.

Maybe the greatest victory of the World Cup isn't who lifts the trophy.

Maybe it's the reminder that the entire world is capable of sharing moments of joy together.

Making Peace With Life

The World Cup has reminded me that keeping an open mind is one of life's greatest gifts.

I may never fully understand every rule.

I may still need someone to explain the finer points of the game.

And that's perfectly okay.

Because sometimes the greatest lessons aren't found in understanding every detail.

Sometimes they're found in simply experiencing the energy.

Watching the passion.

Feeling the excitement.

Celebrating the people.

And realizing that even a lifelong football fan can discover something beautiful by giving another sport a chance.

So while you'll still find me wearing blue and orange for my Broncos and cheering on the Nittany Lions every fall...

You'll also find me smiling as the world comes together for soccer.

Because in the end, it's not just about the game.

It's about the energy.

It's about the people.

It's about the shared experience.

And that's something worth celebrating.

Here's to open minds, unforgettable moments, and discovering peace in places we never expected.

Sometimes making peace with life begins by giving something new a chance.
