Spa Treatments of a Different Kind

Spas have been around since the ancient Romans, but the treatments found therein have fluctuated as much as the fashions. Some treatments are pretty uncommon and others are just plain bizarre. This is subjective, of course, but let's take a look at a few of each.
Uncommon Spa Treatments
A hot stone massage may sound intimidating, but is a blissfully relaxing indulgence with long lasting effects. Smooth basalt stones about the size of your palm are heated to 120 degrees, oiled, and then gradually worked into your back muscles. As the heat relaxes your muscles, the massage will go deeper, relieving your most stubborn knots and leaving you tender and loose.
The Vichy shower comes from France, as the name suggests. Think of a massage shower head, then multiply that by seven and you've got the idea. Not only is a Vichy shower head about four times as large as a regular shower head, it rotates, swivels, and travels horizontally around your body as you lay on a special wet bed. Usually one takes a Vichy shower in tandem with a body polish or wrap treatment such as a sea salt scrub. The jets of the Vichy shower will wash away the salt and dead skin cells leaving you clean and refreshed.
Mud baths have been around since ancient times and continue to be a feature of spas in the Napa Valley area of California. The mud is made from volcanic ash, peat, and natural mineral water. The minerals and enzymes in the bath help pull impurities from your skin while cleansing your pores. Mud baths are also used to treat arthritis.
Bizarre Spa Treatments
Fish pedicure Originating in Turkey, the fish pedicure is the latest trend in spa treatments. Clients place their feet in a small tank and small toothless fish called garra rufa feast on dead skin cells. This method is a less dangerous way of removing the skin, rather than using razor blades. The treatment leaves your feet smoother and softer. And it's a great story to tell afterwards!
Nightingale Excrement Facial Also known as the bird poop facial, this treatment comes from Japan. Geishas of the eighteenth century used nightingale excrement powder, which is rich in amino acid guanine, to remove heavy make-up. The modern day equivalent powder is treated with ultraviolet light to kill any bacteria. Proponents of this facial claim it gives the skin a pretty porcelain quality.
Snake Massage Currently unavailable in the US, the snake massage is said to offer relief of back pain. A spa in Israel uses non-venomous snakes to slither around the client's back. The treatment is said to have a calming effect on the client, once they overcome their misgivings.
Of course, there are plenty of spa treatments that are perfectly conventional and offer replenishing of the body and spirit. Whatever your tastes, I hope you find a spa that is the right fit for you.

  1. Romantic spa resorts in Delhi have given a shelter to those, who wanted to revive their fatigued body and mind via relaxing massages at the hands of some veteran masseurs and masseuses. Indulge in pampering your body as much as you can with Jaypee’s uber-cool creations.
